1601-1610   Henry Hudson discovered the island of Manhattan (1609).

The 1st Dutch settlers arrived from NJ to colonize Manhattan Island (1610).
     
1611-1620          
1621-1630   Peter Minuit, director general of the Dutch West India Co., bought Manhattan Island for about $24 in beads and other trinkets (1626).

Staten Island was acquired by Dutch settlers (1630).

New Amsterdam is founded by the Dutch West India Company (1625).
  The Reformed Protestant Dutch Church was established by settlers in New York. In 1867 it became the Reformed Church of America (1928).    
1631-1640   Jonas Bronck of Holland became the 1st European settler in the Bronx (1638).        
1641-1650   The all Dutch-held area of New York was returned to English control by the treaty of Westminster (1647).     The Pavonia Massacre, across the Hudson River in present day Jersey City resulted in the death of eighty natives (1643).  
1651-1660   Peter Stuyvesant, governor of New Netherland, ordered a wall built to protect the Dutch settlers from the Indians. The wall gave New York’s Wall Street its name (1653).

Jacob Barsimson, the 1st Jewish immigrant to US, arrived in New Amsterdam (1654).
    Stockade Erected in Manhattan (1853):A 12-foot-high wood stockade is erected across lower Manhattan from river to river to protect Dutch settlers from attacks by the British and Indians.    
1661-1670 Thomas Willett was appointed Mayor of New York (1665).

Thomas Delavall was elected as the mayor (1666).

Thomas Willett was elected as the mayor (1667).

Cornelius Van Steenwyk was elected as the mayor (1668).
England installed a municipal government in New York, formerly the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam (1665).

New Amsterdam is ceded by Peter Stuyvesant to England who renamed it New York after James, Duke of York(1664).
    First yellow fever epidemic in the city (1668)  
1671-1680 Thomas Delavallwas elected as the mayor (1671).

Matthias Nicholls was elected as the mayor (1672).

John Lawrence was elected as the mayor (1673).

William Dervall was elected as the mayor (1675).

Nicholas De Mayer was elected as the mayor (1676).

Stephanus Van Cortlandt was elected as the mayor (1677).
Netherlands and England signed the Peace of Westminster. NYC became English (1674).

The Dutch regain New York, renaming it "New Orange." (1673).
       
1681-1690 Stephanus Van Cortlandt was elected as the mayor (1686).     Wall Street Laid Out (1685):Surveyors lay out Wall Street along the line of the stockade.    
1691-1700
