Roman ships are designed with larger catapults and towers. (40 BC)

Romans begin to use the segmented iron torso armor - lorica segmentata (plate armor), good against smashing and heavy piercing blows.

Square/rectangular Roman fortresses are used along communications routes.

Crossbow appears

Cuirass, chest plate, worn shortly followed by the use of a back plate as well (perhaps to counter the weight.) (1250)
1301-1400   Hundred Years War (1337 -1457)   Earliest known gunpowder weapon described by Walter de Millimete. It was three feet long with a two inch bore diameter. (1327)

Wrought-iron seige bombards firing stone cannonballs of 450+ pounds are being used.
1401-1500     First suit of full plate armor developed. (1440)

Germans develop small arms gunpowder weapons with the harquebus becoming the dominant military small arm
1501-1600   Russo-Polish War (1512 -1521)

Austro-Turkish War (1537 - 1547)
  The French develop gunports for their naval vessels. (1501)

Military planners argue over the relative use of longbows versus gunpowder weapons. (1580)
1601-1650   Russo-Polish War (1609 - 1618)

Siamese-Burmese War (1607 - 1618)

First English Civil War (1642 - 1646)
  Sweden has an advanced army because of the use of lighter muskets and cartridges and lighter artillery pieces which had been recently developed.
1651-1700   King Philip's War (1675 - 1676)

King William's War (1689 - 1697)
  Ring and socket bayonet invented. Bayonet use replaces the pike. Flintlock musket replaces the matchlock harquebus.
1701-1750   Queen Anne's War (1702 - 1713)

King George's War (1744 - 1748)
  Ballisitic pendulum invented. This gave gunners the ability to measure the power of a given quantity of gunpowder. (1742)
1751-1800   Cherokee War (1759 - 1761)

American Revolution (1775 - 1783)

Franco-American Naval War (1798 - 1800)
  British develop cylinder-burned charcoal. (1800)
1801-1850   Creek War (1813 -1814)

War of Texas Independence (1836)

Mexican War (1846 - 1848)
  First practical paddle steamer ship built. (1802)

First use of the exploding canister shell invented by Henry Shrapnel. (1803)

Paixhans invents the explosive shell. (1821)
