1911		Thomas Lewis publishes a classic textbook. The mechanism of the heart beat. London: Shaw & Sons and dedicates it to Willem Einthoven.	Birth of Willem J. Kolff Willem J. Kolff invented the artificial kidney dialysis machine.

1913	Dr. Paul Dudley White becomes one of America's first cardiologists, a doctor specializing in the heart and its functions, and a pioneer in use of the electrocardiograph, exploring its potential as a diagnostic tool.
1914			Birth of Jonas Salk (developed a vaccine for polio )
1915			Birth of Joseph Ransohoff (neurosurgeon who invented the modern technique for removing brain tumors )
1916
1917	Julius Wagner-Jauregg discovers the malarial fever shock therapy for general paresis of the insane		Death of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson The first British woman to qualify as a doctor. In 1866, founded a hospital for women in London which was later renamed the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital.

1919			Death of William Osler (called the "Father of Modern Medicine" )
